Academic VS Private Certification [Computer Technicians]

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

This article tries to answer the question to why private certification is not as important as we think it once was.

Private Certification
Private certification is certification provided by private industries or non-profit organizations.

Examples of private certification in the computer industry are:

  • Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA)
  • Microsoft
  • Cisco Systems

These organizations or companies provide many certificates and levels for their products/services.

Private Certification by Private Training Institute
Private academic certification by a private training institute, these training institutes provide self academic certificates. Private institutes provide private training in their facilities. Often emulates a classroom or workplace environment.

Academic Certification
Government accredited schools, provides academic certificates, diplomas, degrees, etc.
Academic certification provides training and academic testing.

Which is the best?
Academic certification, is government approved, contributes to your academic record and your education can be continued at various post-secondary institutes.

Which is the worst?
Private training institutes, as much as you may think private training is valid, this form of education is not valid by anyone.

Often referred to as fake or purchased certification, this certification is not recognized by anyone but the people that approved it.

Training at a private training institute does not account to your academic record and cannot be continued at a post-secondary institution.

Why private certification isn’t worth it anymore
Certification by CompTIA doesn’t seem to be worth it anymore. Although there is many other certificates like Microsoft and Cisco I’ll use CompTIA as an example.

With today’s ever changing world of technology, it is almost impossible to keep up with everything these days. In-fact computer technology changes about ever 2.5 years.

CompTIA certification use to be valid for 10 years, but has now been changed to 3 years with a continuing education program available. All these things cost money and can add up to an extreme financial burden.

Many people believe that the employer should be responsible for these certificates as many employers pay for the employees upgrading and training.

CompTIA certificates are often a 100 question general knowledge test, an academic examination can have between 300 and 600 questions by comparison.

Final Thoughts
It just makes sense to start your career training at an approved post-secondary institute and work your way up to a bachelor’s/masters degree. Academic institutes provide a wide verity of training and covers the same materials for CompTIA certifications. If you are academically certificated, there really isn’t any reason to waste more money. In the end a diploma or bachelor’s degree is worth a lot more than a CompTIA certificate.
