Hibernate and Sleep Mode – Save Power Keeping The Computer On

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

The answer is yes, leaving the computer on can be more cost and time effective than turning them on and off.

Power usage, different computers use different amounts of power, but all are energy efficient. A computer will only use the amount of energy it requires determined by its workload. Think of it like an engine, the faster you drive the more gas you burn. As the computer sits idle, the less energy is used.

On and Off, a computer uses the most amount of power when it powers up. When a computer is turned on, all the computer’s hardware is turned on at 100% till the user’s environment is loaded. During the power on process the computer does a quick hardware check and test, the computer uses all of its resources to start up the operating system. Restarting the computer or turning the computer on and off repeatedly within a short time will use more electricity than to just leave the computer on for that short time, for example, over a 30 minute period turning the computer on twice would use more power than if you left the computer on for the duration. Use the Shutdown option when the computer will be off for more than a day.

The operating system, this user environment not only provides easy to use controls to operate your computer, but also manages your computer’s resources. If you leave the computer on, and sitting idle for an hour, you could save more electricity than turning your computer on and off. Power saving options like hibernate and sleep mode can save you even more electricity.

Sleep mode, this option is like turning your computer off, but leaves an amount of resources active for a quick resume and you don’t have to exit applications. Waking up the computer by pressing the power button is very fast. Use Sleep mode if you want to leave your computer for a few minutes or hours.

Hibernation mode, this option is much like Sleep mode, but saves more power over a longer duration and has a slower wake up time than Sleep mode. Hibernation uses less energy than Sleep mode by saving the computer’s memory to the hard drive and shutting down power to more resources. Hibernation is slower to wake up from than Sleep mode by a few seconds and takes a moderate amount of energy more to wake up. Use Hibernation mode when leaving the computer for longer than a few hours.

Summary:

Sleep – a few minutes to hours, fastest start-up
Hibernation – longer than a few hours, quick start-up
Shutdown – a day or more, slowest start-up

You should always think about how long you are going to be away from the computer and if it is worth turning it off and on again. You may save more time and electricity keeping your computer on rather than off.
