Do Hackers Really Have My Password; Why You Shouldn’t Worry [Computer Security]

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

Websites and other secure information systems do not store passwords. Your password is not stored on these systems, instead a form of data encryption called a Cryptographic Hash is used in place of the password.

A hash is a one directional encryption code that cannot be reversed or decoded. A hash is a check sum representing information to be used for compression. No information is stored in a hash.

However, just because we assume everyone uses encryption doesn’t mean everyone does. Some websites or applications may store your password as is without encryption, case and point we shouldn’t trust just anyone.

How do we know if a website doesn’t store passwords, you can see by looking at the Forgot My Password feature on the website. If the website uses a password reset feature then they don’t store passwords, but if the website emails you your old password then you should avoid that website.

Thou your password maybe safe, hackers may still have all your personal information such as your name, email address, mailing address, etc. My advice is to remember the old adage “Anything your put on the Internet is public even if you think it’s not”.
