Learn moreSo how does this happen, the answer is that discs are not forever. The theoretical life span of a disc is 36 years, however, this is under special storage conditions. In my experience with CDs and DVDs, I am lucky if the disc lasts over four years without routing.
Scratches and finger prints really don’t affect discs much, but rout is a hidden and silent threat to discs.
A disc is basically two layers of plastic pressed together, in-between this plastic are small holes making ones and zeros in-which the laser reads.
Routing and chipping occurs when the space between the plastic grows something that is not air. The heat from the laser, the moisture in the air and rapid cooling of the disc makes the disc brittle.
Discs do not last forever, they will break or rout. Do not rely on discs to backup your data.
