My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3.0 Review

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3.0 Secure Portable Drive with Auto Backup

The ultra portable 1 TB external hard drive from Western Digital (WD) is a nice average drive. Although this drive is a bit on the pricey side when compared to other drives; this drive includes a suite of software. Included is the WD backup and data encryption software for both Windows and Mac OS.

The ultra portable is much smaller than the old WD Elements SE, and about the same as all other ultra portables on the market. The drive has a plastic enclosure with a small white light on the back near the USB port. The light is small and doesn’t light up the room.

The drive is formatted for Windows (NTFS) and includes a number of software and folders in the root directory. Apple users will have to make a copy of the software before reformatting the drive to Apple.

Performance wise, the drive is your average 2.5 inch 5400RPM hard drive with nothing special worth mentioning.

As we can see with the read disk surface, the fastest part of the drive is about 110MB/s with the slowest part of the disk (the end) is a very slow 20MB/s. This is very typical for a 2.5 inch 5400RPM hard drive.

If you’re interested in a drive with backup or encryption software included, this is a good bet. For others that already have software or are not interested in included software, there are many cheaper drives on the market. The WD My Passport Ultra is just an average drive.
