A man named Kino asks a little girl for directions and the girl brings him to her parents’ inn. Kino repairs an old motorrad and the girl asks him about being an adult. The man tells her about his life style and that he is nether an adult or a child but a man. The girl explains that child become an adult through surgery at the age of twelve.

Kino names the motorrad Hermes after an old friend. The wants to be a singer and asks her parents if their was another way to become an adult. Her parents go mad and the girl angers the towns people. Kino agrees to leave as he feels his life is endanger. The towns people ensure him that he is not responsible and they are all adults. The father of the girl picks up a knife.

Kino asks why the father has a knife and the towns people explain. The girl is property until she becomes an adult. The father is going to dispose of his defective daughter. Kino jumps in-front of the knife and the towns people agree it was an accident. Hermes speaks to the girl.

Hermes convinces the girl to live her life and instructs the her how to start the motorrad. The girl escapes with Hermes and she realizes the motorrad can speak. Hermes asks the girl her name and she says Kino. Hermes asks what his name is and she says “Hermes after an old friend of Kino”.
