Storing Passwords [Computer Security]

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

When we save a password to a system like a website or application we know this password has to be saved somewhere, but how are these passwords saved?

The simple method and most common mistake is to save the password as is. This means that the password is saved somewhere in plain sight.

The better and more secure method is to not save the password but instead save a check sum value.

Method:

  • User enters password
  • System generates a check sum from the entered password
  • System compares the check sums and not the password

This way the password is not user readable nor can the check sum value can be entered directly into the password field.

Password Recovery:
Check sums are not supposed to be revered, thus the password must be reset.
You commonly see this with the “Forget my password?” option on many websites.

Another Method

Some systems save passwords using Cryptography, encryption is like check sums but it can be revered.
