Documentation, Every Computer Technician Does It [Computer Repair]

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

The first thing you’re told to do while studying computer science is to write things down, and take notes. This then leads to reports and test forms; all together this is called documentation.

Documentation is one of the most important things you can do, not only for yourself, but for others.

Documentation is a written record of all work done, this allows a technician to micro manage multiple computers and allows other technicians to pickup were one has left off.

Documentation provides a record of the work done, know problems, etc. To the computer owner, documentation is not just proof of service, but is a record of all the changes made to the computer and provides a valuable record of hardware tests.

Top reasons for documentation:

  • Organization
  • Management
  • A record of work done
  • A record of system changes
  • A record of hardware tests
  • Proof of service
  • A reference

Documentation is very easy to do for a computer technician, the majority of tasks are unattended so only the task name and time is needed to be recorded as will as the end results. Because the majority of computer tasks like virus removal is unattended, there’s lots of time to record information. Often technicians just fill out a clipboard answering YES, NO, PASS or FAIL.

A technician that does not do documentation is a disorganized technician.

Computer owners should stay clear of technicians that don’t provide documentation; the lack of documentation can be for a number of reasons: fraud, cutting corners, lying, has something to hide, etc.

Documentation provides thrust to the computer’s owner and large companies require that documentation be provided with all computers serviced.

Documentation is no different from a health or doctors report so don’t skip out on it.
