Can You Encrypt A Flash SWF File

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

No, you cannot truly encrypt your Flash SWF files; if you could do that then it wouldn’t be a Flash file anymore and it will not be executed by Flash Player.

Software that claim to encrypt Flash SWF files do not truly encrypt the file, instead they add additional code to your file and partly encrypt the SWF’s contents. The SWF file can still be decompiled and the encryption scheme can be used to decrypt the contents perfectly.

This might not be the best time, but making a blog is not easy. Would you consider donating?

The only real way to protect your Action Scripts at the moment is obfuscation, the process of making non human readable code. Obfuscation really isn’t protection as it only makes the code hard to understand, but it’s good enough to keep the majority of people away as it takes time to make heads and tails of the codes.

No matter what you do, remember Flash is a open format and you just need to let things go. However, you still have your legal right to protect your work.
