Review: WD Elements SE 1TB USB3.0 Portable Hard Drive

Important!

Dear visitors,

This blog and the Tigarus.com network will be changing our website software in May (2024). There will be some down time and there will be a change to the webpage addresses.

We will also be removing the Anime blogs. The Rocksmith Songs website will be unavailable of a few weeks or months while I move the database to the new software.

At the moment we are running on Wordpress, the new software is an in-house project which is 57 times faster. It will also provide more freedom for development.

Thank you for understanding.

Buy it if you need it, I got two on sale and one came with a defective cable. Includes one foot USB 3.0 / to USB 2.0 cable.

This drive is a great potable hard drive if you don’t need a strong body. Plastic outer body with lots of interior space and aluminum bottom plate inside. USB connector and activity light built into hard drive with a cheap bending feel, maybe easy to snap or break the USB port off.

Excellent USB 3.0 performance with about 80MB/s read and write speed. This drive runs cool and quiet with a small activity light that doesn’t light up an entire room at night.

Product: WDBPCK0010BBK-NESN
Manufacture: Western Digital
Retail Price: $99.99 CAD
Online Price: $74.99 CAD
Capacity: 1000 GBs
Interface: USB 3.0 / USB 2.0
Pre Formatted: Windows NTFS
Body: Plastic
Included Cable: USB 3.0 (1 Foot)
Dimensions: 112.5 x 78.7 x 19.1mm (L x W x H)

I can’t recommend this product as one of the two purchased came with a defective cable, the included cable is only about one foot long, and the drive’s USB port feels weak which maybe easy to break.

Although, the drive is wonderful when it runs, the USB port is it’s biggest weakness.

More about the drive, shorter body than SATA enclosures since the USB port is built in. This drive is twice the thinness of a standard 2.5 inch hard drive. The enclosure’s body is thick and has a considerable amount of interior space which is good for dropping on the carpet since the enclosure is plastic. This unit can be easily opened from the bottom using a credit card.

Apple and Linux note, this drive comes pre formatted with the Windows NTFS format and may require NTFS driver to be installed to operate. Alliteratively you may format the drive to run on your Apple or Linux computer. Note: formatting the drive will erase all data on the drive.

Pros and Cons

Pro: Runs quiet with a cool touch
Pro: Fast 80MB/s read and write speed
Pro: Small activity light doesn’t light up a dark room
Pro: 1TB Storage Capacity

Con: Plastic Body
Con: USB 3.0 port is not a type A connector
Con: USB port feels weak, maybe easy to break
Con: Including USB 3.0 cable only one foot long
Con: Some included cables maybe defective

Benchmarks

USB 2.0 Benchmarks

No benchmark taken, drive speed will easily max out the USB 2.0 interface.

USB 3.0 Benchmarks

Amazing speed and performance, the same as any other 2.5inch SATA 1TB 5400RPM hard drive.
