Dear visitors,

Purpose: Determines the data type of a variable.

Description: Java Script is a highly dynamic system, variables are not restricted to one data type and some data types can consists of many different instances. Example: Array, HTML Element are all object data types. Although, we can test the instance of an object data type, detecting instances is not supported by many older Web browsers. Type provides a cross browser solution.

Returns a string value, see return types below.

Compatibility: Works with all Web browsers.

Return Types:

  • HTMLElement

  • object
  • boolean
  • string
  • number
  • function
  • window
  • [object x]

Note: if no detectable type is found the return value will be [object x], note that x will be defined by the Web browser.
